Randi Weingarten, the old president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), is not often a source of wisdom for those who argue for educational freedom. But on a recent call-in segment of the Brian Lehrer show on New York Public Radio, she offered a nugget of the truth that teachers, especially conservatives and independent should, should be grasping.
The exchange then started a public school teacher in New York to complain about the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the Aft’s New York Affiliate, who led Weingarten himself before he stood to the national presidency.
The caller was upset about the approval of the Union of Zohran Mamdani, a self -described socialist, for mayor of New York City. He noted that many teachers had already stopped contributing their contribution “because of the Mamdani chemistry”, and considering it another example of the union in partial politics. The reaction of Weingarten was refreshing bone: “The trade union can be as political if he wants, as long as it is democratic.” And then, the most important advice: “You have the right to withdraw [union] Contributing if you don’t like the direction of the Union. “In other words, if you do not agree with how the union spends your money, you just have to finish.
New Group offers teachers a way to escape from the progressive Union ‘Monopoly’
For once I couldn’t agree with Weingarten anymore. Teachers who are tired of the banking role of the Democratic Party agenda by trade union material must follow her counsel and stop overing their hard -earned salary to what has become little more than a political machine. In the 2024 election cycle, more than 99 percent of the campaign contributions went to Democrats from Weingarten. This scam is a one -way street that captivates the money from teachers directly in the treasury of progressive politicians and causes.
The unions of the teachers, including the AFT and its affiliated companies such as the UFT, have long functioned as an arm of the Democratic party. They are currently related to a money laundering operation, which are transferring funds of educators to promote ideologies that are fundamentally resisting or now Marxist indoctrination in classrooms or notes of candidates such as Mamdani. Less than 10% of the contribution of the National Education Association actually goes to representing members in negotiations or grievances. The bulk becomes political activities, lush salaries for trade union bosses and campaigns that are contrary to the interests of the teachers they claim to protect. Teachers get the short end of the stick. Since 1970, inflation-corrected expenditure per student in public schools have been raised by 164 percent, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Yet the real salaries of teachers have risen by only 3 percent in the same period. Where did all that money go? Not to the classroom or the educators, but to bureaucratic and trade union -driven agendas that prioritize political power above the results of students and the well -being of teachers.
The good news is that teachers no longer have to be complicit in this racket. The 2018 decision of the Supreme Court in Janus v. Afscme was a milestone victory for individual rights. The ruling ruled that the force of public employees, including teachers, to pay trade union rights if a condition for employment is in violation of the first amendment. In essence, millions of employees in the public sector freed from compulsory speech financing with which they do not agree.
But unsubscribing can feel daunting. Trade unions make the process cumbersome and many teachers are concerned about losing benefits such as liability insurance. But the newly launched teacher Freedom Alliance, now led by conservative educational lawyer Ryan Walters – the current State Superintendent of Oklahoma of public instruction – stands up to enable teachers throughout the country.
The Alliance offers teachers who cancellation for their government associations free coverage for personal liability insurance of a maximum of $ 2 million. That is twice the amount that is usually supplied by the AFT and it does not cost any costs for the teachers. The backers of the Alliance believe so strongly in dismantling the union’s monopoly that they pay the bill themselves.
The answer was overwhelming. In the first year, the Teacher Freedom Alliance has already helped more than 2500 teachers to unsubscribe from their trade unions. A massive exodus of the trade unions is the only way to force them back to the base – aimed at honest representation, better working conditions and student success instead of partisan activism.

Imagine the impact if conservative and independent teachers throughout the country would take Weingarten at her word. Trade unions would lose millions of dollars in income, force them to moderate their political excesses or risk irrelevance.

Teachers were able to reduce those savings to their families, pension or even charity causes that are tailored to their values. And it would send a clear message that educators will not be pawns in a political game that undermines their profession and the children they serve.
The advice of Weingarten, delivered in a moment of frankness, exposes the vulnerability of the trade union model. If the direction does not suit them, teachers must stop giving Randi Weingarten their money. It is time for teachers to force trade union bosses to change their ways or to go. Their students and their conscience will thank them.
