Neutrogena is recalling some of its popular makeup wipes due to possible bacterial contamination.
The recall affects 1,312 cases of Neutrogena’s “Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes” after tests revealed the presence of pluralibacter gergoviae, a bacteria known to cause infections in certain people, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The affected products have been distributed to several states, including Texas, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, and bear the lot number 1835U6325A, the agency said.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Pluralibacter gergoviae can lead to serious infections in individuals with weakened immune systems, chronic health problems, or those undergoing surgery.

She pointed out that the FDA has classified this as a level two recall, meaning the “danger is very minimal.”

“We see these recalls all the time in a lot of cosmetics,” says Saphier.
Saphier noted that these types of bacteria occur naturally in soil and water.
She also encouraged consumers to be careful when applying products to their faces if they have an open wound.
“It will most likely be safe, but you can still expose yourself to bacterial infections,” Saphier said.

Over the summer, DermaRite Industries similarly announced it was recalling products including hand soap, deodorant, lotions, shampoo and hand sanitizer due to concerns about bacterial contamination, the FDA said.
