There is a great help wanted board for truck drivers. The American truck associations says that the country needs around 60,000 more drivers.
The association states that some of the biggest causes of the shortage of trucks are that people get older from the workforce and the difficulties in finding qualified drivers. Instead of tackling these problems, autonomous vehicle company Gatik simply takes the driver out of the comparison.

“That is where autonomy comes in. So, automation is the only long -term feasible option, “said Gatik CEO Gautam Narang.

Gatik currently has more than 100 self -driving trucks on the road, with most of them in Texas, Arkansas and Canada.
And that is just the beginning.
“We are talking about the use of hundreds and ultimately thousands of trucks for some of the largest private fleets in the world, “said Narang.

“We enable our customers, who are some of the largest retailers, to move goods more often and without the extra costs. We do not want our customers to pass on the costs of transport to their consumers,” said Narang.

But safety comes first, especially if no one is behind the wheel.
“There is a fundamental assessment between safety and efficiency. And gaining that balance is actually super difficult. You don’t want to do this on the way. You want as much as possible [to] Find this suitable balance in simulation, “said Stanford Aeronautics Professor Mykel Kochenderfer.

Kochenderfer added that autonomous vehicle companies should take baby steps, starting with limited implementations to guarantee safety.
“I don’t think it is possible to build a completely safe system, because there are always completely unexpected events. But I really believe there is a lot of opportunity to drive much safer than human drivers,” Kochenderfer said.

The American truck associations do not see autonomous vehicles as a replacement for truck drivers. Instead, they see them as a way to help the industry where they are most needed, such as for demanding long traits.
