The government shutdown is about to hit tens of millions of Americans as the Trump administration refuses to fund nutrition assistance for 41.7 million Americans, the vast majority of whom are children, the elderly and the disabled.
Republicans have shut down the government by refusing to negotiate the necessary Democratic votes in the Senate to keep the government open. The Republicans thought they could finance the government on their own.
After realizing this wasn’t possible, Republicans assumed Democrats would agree to raise insurance premiums for 23 million Americans, and 4 million people would lose coverage.
The Democrats refused, and they haven’t budged an inch in the last month.
Democrats have made it clear that they will only vote for a funding bill that restores Obamacare subsidies to the American people.
A new poll on the shutdown, shown to Democratic leaders on Thursday, showed that voters by a nearly 2-1 margin (60%-34%) said it was more important to reduce health care costs than to reopen the government.
Trump, Thune and Johnson are still trying to win the messaging war by blaming the Democrats for the shutdown, when what voters really care about are the lower health care costs that Democrats are fighting for.
The situation turns into a complete disaster if they can’t even get the message across properly, which is what happened Friday with Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Speaker Mike Johnson.
Rollins and Johnson completely botched the message.
