The Mexican authorities said that 20 dead bodies, including five beheaded corpses, were discovered on Monday in the Culiacan city of Culiacan.
Four beheaded corpses were found hanging on a highway bridge that led from the city. The heads of the bodies were discovered in the neighborhood in a plastic bag, the authorities said according to the Associated Press.

The same day, 16 extra dead bodies with shot wounds were found in a white van on the same highway. Together with the corpses – one of which was also beheaded – the authorities apparently found a note from one of the cartel groups. The content of that memorandum was not immediately announced, AP reported.

Culiacan, which has around 1 million inhabitants and is the capital of the Sinaloa state of West -Mexico, was edited by a war for control between two rival drug trafficking groups of the Sinaloa cartel -Los Chapitos and La Mayiza.

Mexican authorities condemned the deadly actions on Monday. However, many residents of Sinaloa say that, according to AP, the authorities no longer have control over the violence.

“Military and police services work together to restore the total peace in Sinaloa,” said Feliciano Castro, spokesperson for the Sinaloa government, in a statement on Monday.

Last month the US imposed sanctions on Los Chapitos and indicated a specially designated global terrorist. In a statement at that time, the US Department of Finance said that the group facilitates the production and human trafficking of Fentanyl.

“Los Chapitos is a powerful, hyper -violent faction of the Sinaloa cartel in the forefront of Fentanyl trade in the United States,” said Finance Minister Scott Bessent last month. “At the Ministry of Treasury, we carry out President Trump’s mandate to completely eliminate drug cartels and to enter into violent leaders, such as ‘El Chapo’s’ children.”

Armed men affiliated with the Sinaloa cartel were also involved in October 18, 2024, in which the American marine veteran Nicholas Quets in Sonora, Mexico was killed.
