Jeremy Corbyn, the former leader of Britain’s Labor Party who was expelled from his party over allegations of anti-Semitism, worked Sunday to help Zohran Mamdani tighten his grip on New York City.
Mamdani’s alliance with Corbyn comes within days of the opening of the polls in the New York City mayoral race, where he is the Democrats’ progressive challenger.
Known for his criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and his alignment with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) like Corbyn, Mamdani has faced accusations of anti-Semitism.
Corbyn, now an independent MP, announced his support for Mamdani on Facebook on Sunday, posting a photo of himself holding up a ‘North London 4 Zohran’ shirt.

“Let’s get Zohran across the finish line for a New York that’s affordable for everyone!” read the message.
‘Corbyn supports Mamdani. What a surprise.’ one social user commented. “Why are you getting involved in influencing politics in New York?” asked another.
Corbyn also shared a phone banking link that leads to a website organized by the NYC chapter of the DSA that encourages volunteers to mobilize voters for Mamdani.
“Join NYC-DSA and Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of the British Labor Party, as we call on New Yorkers to vote for Zohran Mamdani for mayor. We are just two days away from Election Day and every conversation brings us closer to winning a better New York,” the website said.

Corbyn’s well-documented history of accusations of anti-Semitism dates back to 2020, when the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) found that the Labor Party under his leadership had committed unlawful acts of discrimination against Jewish members.
Corbyn was suspended and formally expelled from the Labor Party in 2024 over his response to the report. He has since launched a new left-wing political party called ‘Your Party’ and continues to deny all accusations of anti-Semitism.

In response to the collaboration, former New York governor and mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo quickly condemned Mamdani’s decision, writing on X.
“With Jeremy Corbyn – someone whose party under his leadership has committed unlawful acts of discrimination against Jewish people – phone banking for @ZohranKMamdani says everything you need to know.
New York does not need the politics of moral compromise. We need leadership that rejects anti-Semitism, extremism and division in every form and in every corner,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, a week before the election, a campaign finance watchdog group, the Coolidge Reagan Foundation, filed two criminal referrals against Mamdani, alleging that he had received illegal contributions from foreign donors.
The Mamdani campaign claims that every issue regarding financial contributions has been resolved.
