Tennis legend Martina Navratilova delivered some hard truths when she explained exactly why she’s “fucking pissed” about the state of America under Donald Trump in a blistering new ad, while also urging people not to sit on the sidelines and “keep protesting.”
“I defected from a totalitarian regime and for God’s sake I’m going to be intimidated again and have to be careful what I say,” the Czechoslovakian-born sports icon, who defected to the United States in 1975 at just 18, said in a video released Wednesday by the conservative-led nonprofit Home of the Brave, which through its videos seeks to highlight the damage Trump is doing during his second term.
“I grew up in a communist country, Czechoslovakia,” continued the 18-time Grand Slam champion, who battled breast and throat cancer in 2023. “So I know what it looks and feels like to live in a totalitarian regime where you can’t express your opinions, or worse, be put in jail for political opinions.”
“I am so proud to be an American, but I am ashamed of what Trump is doing to our country,” she added. “I am extremely angry about people who capitulate to Trump, whether it is law firms, schools, politicians or corporations. We are too big to fail when we stand together, but divided we fall and that is what Trump is counting on. Chaos, fear.”
“This was the freest country in the world when I defected in 1975. If this were the situation for me now, I certainly would not choose to live here,” Navratilova said, revealing her concerns that complacency or fear means people do not want to rise up against the current president.
“When you leave a totalitarian regime and come to a freedom-loving country, of course you have to say something. Speaking out is the patriotic thing to do when you see something wrong. Don’t be afraid. You can find ways to make a difference.”
