Humanitarian aid transported by Greta Thunberg’s second fleet will not even reach Gaza due to a lack of docking facilities and the “legal” blockade of Israel, a maritime expert has said.
While the boats of the Swedish activist left Barcelona on Sunday, Thunberg was accompanied by figures, including Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham and former mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau.
The global Sumud fleet, consisting of around 70 boats, has help, including food, water and medicines and hopes to bring this to citizens in the Gaza Strip.
The fleet is expected to be accompanied by more boats before they reach Gaza around 14 or 15 September.

“There are no port facilities in this area to release something and Gaza misses a gate that is enough to receive such a large fleet. There is a small fishing port, but that is insufficient.
“The US built a temporary port at considerable costs, around $ 200 million, and dismantled because it made it untenable in the area,” confirmed the professor of the US Naval War College.

During a press conference in Barcelona before she left, Thunberg framed the mission as a survival act.
“The story here is about Palestine. The story here is how people are deliberately robbed of the very fundamental means to survive,” said Thunberg, claiming that Israel violated international law by “intercepting boats in international waters illegally” and preventing humanitarian aid to reach citizens.
This is not Thunberg’s first attempt to provide help. In June she was deported after her ship, the Madleen, was stopped by Israeli troops together with 11 others on board.

Professor Kraska emphasized that having the blockade of Israel is a legal operation during an armed conflict to prevent them from coming in, but it must meet certain requirements, including notification, effectiveness and impartial enforcement.
“Ultimately, there is Israel Authority to defend the blockade,” said Kraska. “But it is not only the law – politics and practical realities are also involved. Both parties weigh those dimensions.
“Israel, however, claims that his maritime safety operations, which look like a blockade, are a legal measure and will act to prevent ships from mooring.
