Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has decided to press charges against a man who groped and tried to kiss her on Tuesday while she was taking a short walk in Mexico City.

Sheinbaum, 62, was seen in a video that has since gone viral speaking to locals when a man approaches the president from behind and places his hands on her body before leaning toward her face. The Mexican president later described the man as “completely drunk.”

In the video, Sheinbaum, who is immediately and visibly shocked, turns to the man and gently pushes his hands away while managing to maintain a stiff smile.
The video shows a government official quickly stepping in to separate the two as the president retreats. The man was then led away as onlookers watched in disbelief.
The incident reportedly occurred as Sheinbaum walked between the Mexican National Palace and the Ministry of Education.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada announced Tuesday evening that the man had been arrested, The Associated Press reported.

Speaking at her daily press conference on Wednesday, Sheinbaum described the moment as symbolic of a broader issue facing Mexican women.
“This is something that I have experienced as a woman, but it is something that all women in our country experience,” she said.
Discussing the video of the incident, Sheinbaum said posting it was “completely unethical and immoral.”

In the aftermath of the incident, Sheinbaum announced a plan to launch a campaign to educate men about respecting women’s rights.
“This is a matter of dignity for women and recognition of our rights,” she said. “We published a women’s rights booklet, and this is related to that. It’s a matter of defending all Mexican women.”
Sheinbaum, who took office as Mexico’s first female president in October 2024, stressed that the incident would not prevent her from engaging directly with citizens.
“We cannot distance ourselves from the people,” she said. “That would mean denying where we come from and who we are.”

Before becoming president, Sheinbaum served as head of the Mexico City government until 2023.
