Someone was playing possum – or stuffed animal.
Among the plush kangaroos, dingoes and Tasmanian devils ready to be purchased by parents of troubled children, a live brushtail possum waited in a gift shop at an Australian airport this week.
The wild animal was first spotted by a customer in the store on Wednesday, said retail manager Liam Bloomfield of Hobart Airport in Tasmania.
“A passenger reported it to … one of the agency staff members, who couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing,” Bloomfield told The Associated Press. “She then called (airport) management and said there was a possum in the store.”

Airport employees were able to remove the animal without damaging it.
“I imagine he saw some of the stuffed animals for sale on the shelf and decided to make that his home,” Bloomfield joked about why the possum was hiding among the stuffed animals. “It wanted to blend in.”

“Do you recognize the impostor?” the airport wrote in a Facebook post Thursday that showed the opossum curled up in a cage with its stuffed counterparts.
“This cheeky stray possum has found a clever hiding place among the Australian cuddly toys in our store,” the airport continued. “Fortunately, he was safely moved from the terminal area and the area was cleaned.”

Bloomfield said the possums not only found a way to the airport, but their hearts as well.
“We will have a little sanctuary for the possum,” he revealed, according to The Independent. “There will be a nice picture. Once it has a name, we will put a nice post in front of the store to make sure it is remembered.”
