President Donald Trump‘s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, says she finds it “pretty funny” that some people are “capping” at her “joking offer” to perform at an alternative Super Bowl halftime show.
The podcaster, who is married to the president’s son Eric Trump, offered to headline a MAGA-themed halftime show announced by Turning Point USA, the right-wing political group founded by the slain activist. Charlie Kirk. Her suggestion was in response to right-wing criticism that Latin singer Bad Bunny was selected as the official halftime headliner of next year’s Super Bowl.
“So we just heard something that’s pretty funny. I heard that there are a lot of people on the left who are melting down and very upset about the possibility that I could be performing at the halftime show for the Super Bowl for Turning Point USA,” she said in a Instagram video Saturday.
Bad Bunny’s outspoken condemnation of Donald Trump’s increasing ICE raids and his advocacy for Puerto Rico have sparked backlash from some MAGA supporters, who also widely complained that the three-time Grammy winner has no songs that are entirely in English.
The musician clapped back during his monologue on “Saturday Night Live” earlier this month.
Claiming that her initial suggestion was “obviously a comedic and funny offer,” Lara Trump doubled down on her proposal, telling her nearly three million Instagram followers that it “still stands” despite the fact that she was never actually offered the opportunity.
“I have not been asked in any formal way to perform for Turning Point’s halftime show for the Super Bowl,” she continued. “But everyone keeps getting angry and panicking about it.”
Last week, the former co-chairman of the Republican National Committee nominated himself to appear on the “All American Halftime Show,” which is intended to rival the big game broadcast on NBC on her “Correct view of Lara Trump” podcast. She claimed she had heard from “a lot of NFL team owners” who were excited by Bad Bunny’s selection.
“I don’t know what the NFL was thinking about this, but I can see that there are a lot of people who are not happy with it,” the political pundit said. “The good news is we don’t need the NFL. We don’t need any of these woke losers to perform, we can have our own performance, so shout out to Turning Point for coming up with their own halftime show, I love it.”
Lara Trump, whose most streamed song on Spotify is a cover of the 1989 song “I Won’t Back Down” originally performed by the late rock musician Tom Petty, has just a paltry 13,000 monthly listeners on Spotify compared to Bad Bunny, who has 81.3 million monthly listeners.
In 2020, her cover of “I Won’t Back Down” sparked controversy after Petty’s family issued a cease and desist order banning Donald Trump from using the song during the campaign. Nevertheless, Lara Trump continued to perform the cover of her father-in-law’s golf club in Westchester, New York, earlier this year.
