O’Leary Ventures Chairman Kevin O’Leary Joins ‘Varney & Co.’ to weigh in on the fate of fare refunds as Generation Z takes their parents to job interviews.
A growing number of hiring managers say they’re seeing a surprising new trend among Gen Z job candidates: bringing a parent into the interview, sometimes even on Zoom calls.
‘The Big Money Show’ discusses the growing trend of young adults receiving financial help from their parents.
For O’Leary, it’s not about generational stereotypes, it’s about independence. In today’s competitive labor market, he says, employers are looking for candidates who can think, decide and execute independently. When a parent walks into the room, he says, that independence is immediately compromised.
“The first question I would ask the son or daughter, I would say, do you want me to hire your mother or you? What is she doing here?’ O’Leary said, “That resume is going straight into the trash at one of my operations.”
‘The Big Money Show’ panel reacts to new data showing that Gen Z hiring has collapsed, while older workers are staying in the workforce longer.
He said the situation happened to him recently during a virtual interview.
“It happened to me on a Zoom call and I just said, this isn’t going to work… Your mother is not going to be part of this discussion,” he said.

Optics aside, O’Leary sees this move as a warning sign for employers evaluating risks.
“It means you can’t do this alone… It’s a horrible signal,” O’Leary said, calling it “a very, very bad idea.”
