The Kelce brothers are showing their love for trailblazing women’s hockey player Laila Edwards of Team USA after she helped secure Olympic gold in an overtime victory over rival Canada last week.
Jason and Travis Kelce — on one recent episode from their “New Heights” podcast – rocked Team USA gear to celebrate the winning men and women before the final brother made a comment about Edwards, a fellow Ohio native from the city of Cleveland Heights, where both brothers grew up and attended high school.
“I’m just going to say, Laila, I have two banners at the Cleveland Heights hockey rink. I’m not sure how many banners you have,” Travis Kelce teased in response to Edwards. recently told his sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce, that she was the “best athlete” to come out of town.
Travis Kelce, whose lighthearted jab made his brother laugh, continued, “I’ll give it to you [the title] because you’re the only one who has gold. So a little tip of the veil for you, Laila. It was great to see you make it.”
The shoutout comes just days after President Donald Trump’s demeaning joke about inviting the women’s team along with the men’s team to the nation’s capital, comments that sparked backlash in the hockey world and beyond.
While the gold medal-winning men received a visit from Trump on Tuesday, the president has claimed that the women – who declined his invitation to his State of the Union address – will come to the White House in the future.
Edwards, the first Black woman to represent the Stars and Stripes in hockey at the Winter Olympics, sprang into action when she pushed the puck toward the net, which team captain Hilary Knight tapped in for a draw goal against Canada in the gold medal showdown last week.
