Donald Trump has stepped up his threats against Iran because he loses the war he started.
Trump’s latest idea is that the United States should commit war crimes to force Iran to surrender.
The president posted on his social media site:
The United States of America is in serious discussions about a new and more reasonable regime to end our military operations in Iran. Great progress has been made, but if for some reason an agreement is not reached in the short term, which is likely to be the case, and if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately ‘Open for Business’, we will end our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely destroying all their power plants, oil wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all the desalination plants!), which we have purposely not yet ‘touched’. This will be retaliation for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran slaughtered and killed during the old regime’s 47-year “Reign of Terror.”
What Trump is suggesting is a war crime.
Destroying the infrastructure of a civilian population necessary for their survival is a violation of international law and a war crime.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked by Garrett Haake about Trump’s possible war crimes:
The president posted a message this morning about his threat to do so when leaving Iran. He said we could blow up and completely destroy all their plans for electricity generation, oil resources, Har Island and possibly all desalination plans under international law. It is generally prohibited to attack civilian infrastructure in this way.
Why is the president threatening what could amount to a war crime against the US military? And how do you reconcile that with the government’s repeated statement that the US does not target civilians?
Leavitt’s response showed that the entire Trump administration is willing to commit war crimes.
