It’s fair to wonder whether any part of the Trump administration is living in reality. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had not held a news conference in the past two weeks, but on Wednesday she took questions from reporters, and it did not go well.
Leavitt was asked who Trump is supposedly negotiating with in Iran, and she could not answer.
The press secretary said:
I’m not going to go into the details of these negotiations and conversations that are still taking place.
You can of course imagine that these are very sensitive, diplomatic discussions. And I repeat: I remember giving you all the same answer when we negotiated the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, and giving you the same answer during the twelve-day war between Iran and Israel. I gave you the same answer regarding many of the other global conflicts for which this administration has negotiated solutions.
President Trump will give his diplomats the freedom they need to conduct these sensitive diplomatic discussions without being negotiated and litigated through the news media.

It seems increasingly likely that these negotiations are not real, or that the Trump administration is negotiating with people who do not have the power to end the war.
Leavitt also had a message for voters returning to Trump in 2024 that was not at all helpful to Republicans in 2026.
