Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is the most deviant politician in America today. Often willing to take on his fellow Democrats, he appears unique on Capitol Hill, even though his ideas are shared by the majority of Americans, including many Democrats.
It’s not entirely clear how Fetterman went from a progressive and failed Senate candidate in 2016 to a victory in 2022 and how he became the moderate thorn in the side of the ever-left-wing, lurching Democrats. Some believe his medical problems changed him, but the answer could be much simpler.
In fact, it may not so much be that Fetterman has distanced himself from his party, but that his party has distanced himself from Fetterman.
A striking example is Israel. Even five years ago, support for the Jewish state among elected Democrats was as widespread as the EZ Pass on America’s highways. But today the absurd and fabulist consensus within the party is that Israel committed genocide.

Fetterman, along with a few others such as Rep. Ritchie Torres, DY, has fought back hard against these anti-Israel narratives even as nominally pro-Israel voices, like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have shamefully kept their heads on the issue.
More recently, regarding the current shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, Fetterman is once again clinging to his own party leadership by insisting that the agency should be fully funded, without any strings attached.
He is the only Democrat in the Senate who takes this sensible position.

Fetterman is also virtually the only Democrat willing to applaud the deaths of Iran’s brutal regime leaders while the rest of his party virtually undermines the war effort with nonsensical attacks on Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Meanwhile, Fetterman said last year of New York City’s communist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, one of the most popular figures in the Democratic polls: “Everything I’ve read about him, I agree with almost none of it politically.” That’s exactly where I stand as a Democrat. He’s not even a Democrat, to be honest.”
But here Fetterman seems to be wrong. In fact, Democrats lined up to support and endorse Madman Mamdani and his merry band of capitalism-hating DSA darlings, and it is Fetterman who is losing support among party voters.

But he is not losing support among all voters.
According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, a whopping 72% of Republican voters in the Keystone state approve of Fetterman, while only 22% of Democrats do, with independents split about 50/50.
This is the strange place we find ourselves: More Republican voters in Pennsylvania approve of Democratic Senator Fetterman than Republican voters in Texas approve of Republican Senator John Cornyn.
JOHN FETTERMAN LOOKS ON THE GOP’S SIDE IN THE SENATE VOTE, SAYS DEMOCRATS ‘CROSSED A LINE’ AND PUT POLITICS ABOVE THE COUNTRY
All of this has led to speculation that the hoodie-wearing maverick could switch parties and run for his seat in 2028 as a Republican. But that’s not the feeling I get from Fetterman’s words and actions.

Fetterman wants to save the Democratic Party, not abandon it.
The best way for Fetterman to achieve this goal is not by defending his Senate seat in two years, but by running for president.

I recently polled some insiders I know on both sides of the aisle, asking whether Fetterman really has a chance of winning the presidency in 2028. The most common answer was ‘yes’, with a dash of ‘absolutes’.
The logic here is that every other potential Democrat who might stand on the stage of a presidential primary debate would prefer the idiotic left-wing ideas that Fetterman rails against.

Especially now that sports media celebrity Stephen A. Smith has announced he will not run because of the financial hit he would take, Fetterman would be the only Democrat in the field offering a path back to centrist politics.

The odds are firmly against Fetterman in his quixotic mission to restore sanity to America’s oldest political party, but then again, what were the odds that this man would ever become a senator in the first place?
All Americans should be happy with this one senator who speaks plainly, regardless of party talking points, marching orders, or the shifting winds of public opinion. Perhaps it’s naive to believe that these qualities are still important to voters, but if so, call me naive.
