While Hungary stands for challenges in Europe, it sees an improved relationship with the US, with Szijjártó abandoning it as a “Golden Age”.
“Under the democratic government we were considered Hungarians as enemies. There was a very hostile approach by the Democratic government,” said Szijjártó, referring to the White House of former President Joe Biden. “And since President Trump has been in office, this thing has been totally, totally changed … We actually experience the Golden Age of this American-Hungarian relationship.”
Hungary also supports Trump’s call for larger NATO spending, since the alliance is confronted with renewed pressure on recent raids in the airspace of Denmark, Estonia and Poland. Some incidents are connected to Russia.

“We hope that NATO will further strengthen in the future. We agree with the approach of President Trump who argues for increasing the share of defense expenditure of the GDPs of the allies,” Sijjártó said.
In the midst of rising tensions between NATO and Russia, Hungary is uniquely aware of the serious risks of a confrontation between the two parties.
Hungary shares a border with Ukraine and has witnessed the impact of Kyiv’s war with Russia up close. Sijjártó warned that a confrontation between NATO and Russia could cause the Second World War. Hungary, however, sees Trump as a probable peacemaker in the region.
