Lisbon’s historic Glória Funiculs derailed during rush hour on Wednesday, reportedly to kill at least 15 people and injure 18. A child is one of the injured.
The cable tram, which has worn residents and tourists residents and tourists for generations, came from the tracks before collided with a nearby building.
According to AP NewsEarly reports suggest that a loose cable may have caused the derailment. The Glória Funicularicular, employed since 1885 and recognized as one of the most iconic sights of Lisbon, was full of commuters and sightsers when the accident happened.
Emergency services arrived within a few minutes, where the wounded was treated and others transported to local hospitals.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the families of victims and promised complete transparency in the official investigation and said, “It is a tragedy of such that we have never seen before.”
Authorities have launched a probe in the mechanical failure, where local media mentioned concern about recent maintenance schedules.
AP News added that the Glória Funicular has long been a tourist draw that connects the city center of Lisbon with the Bairro Alto district and welcomes thousands of visitors every year.

The Portuguese government has declared a national day of mourning to honor the victims and said, “A tragic accident … caused the irreparable loss of human life, which was left to mourn their families and the whole country too terrible.”
