Sometimes beneath the noble exterior, human imperfection is exposed and a solid reputation is shattered.
With the recent passing of Robert Mueller, we are reminded that even accomplished figures can fall into an abyss of bad decisions and regrettable mistakes. His tarnished legacy is the sad coda to a once great life and career.
Mueller’s previous service in the military and high government positions, including as director of the FBI, were commendable. But in May 2017, he agreed to serve as special counsel to investigate allegations that Donald Trump conspired with Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

What followed was a despicable partisan inquisition that tore the nation apart and severely hampered Trump’s first term. Criminal tactics, coercion and threats were used, innocent people were targeted and persecuted, and legal rights were shattered, leaving lives in ruins.
Ultimately, Mueller’s late report found that there was no collusion between Trump and Russia. Anyone with an ounce of common sense already knew that. It was all a hoax and the worst political fraud ever committed. But the damage had already been done and Mueller bears much of the blame. And the shame.
I told the ugly details in my book: “Witch Hunt: The Story of the Greatest Mass Delusion in American Political History.“As special counsel, Mueller’s actions were not only damaging, but clearly unfair to Trump and so many others.

CONSERVATIVES ACCUSED JACK SMITH OF INADEQUATE TIES WITH JUDGES IN TRUMP CASES AFTER NEW DOCUMENT DUMP
His inability to find a shred of incriminating evidence against Trump has not deterred him. In violation of Justice Department rules, he publicly discredited the president with stories of suspicious behavior, rather than with evidence that rose to the level of criminality.
The special counsel found early in his investigation that there was no evidence of collusion and that the president had committed no crimes. Mueller admitted it to Trump’s lawyers during a meeting on March 5, 2018. He should have ended his misguided investigation on the spot, to spare the nation prolonged division and trauma.
But Mueller was obsessed and refused to do the right thing. Instead, he shifted his focus to whether the president has obstructed justice in some way, including by daring to publicly criticize the investigation. Trump, of course, had a First Amendment right to do this. Mueller didn’t care.
SEN. JOHN KENNEDY: HOW THE MEDIA WENT FROM ‘WATCHDOG TO ATTACK DOG’ ON TRUMP AND RUSSIA COLLABORATION STORY
The following year he chased the elusive spirit of obstruction without success. It was especially ridiculous because fired FBI Director James Comey and his deputy, Andrew McCabe, both testified that no one obstructed the bureau’s investigation and that the investigation continued uninterrupted after Comey’s departure.

It doesn’t matter. In his March 2019 report, Mueller turned the law on its head with an incendiary statement guaranteed to light a fire under the president’s inveterate haters:
“While this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it does not exonerate him either.”
SEN LINDSEY GRAHAM: COMEY’S FBI INVESTIGATED ME AND 8 COLLEAGUES IN ANTI-TRUMP CRUSADE
Mueller’s reasoning was incomprehensible. As any lawyer will tell you, it is never a prosecutor’s job to exonerate people. By this one act, Mueller managed to reverse the burden of proof and the presumption of innocence, which are sacred principles in American law.
He had no intention of treating Trump fairly or complying with the law. Instead, Mueller spent 183 pages smearing Trump by suggesting that, under certain circumstances that didn’t actually exist, the facts could support an obstruction case.
Mueller declined to indict the president in court, but was determined to indict him with outlandish smears in the court of public opinion. He cunningly gave the impression that Trump may have been guilty of misconduct because he could not prove otherwise. It was disgraceful.
JACK SMITH SAYS TRUMP ‘WILLINGLY’ BROUGHT THE LAW, DESTROYES DOJ ‘RETRIBUTION’ IN SECOND TERM
Mueller should never have accepted the job of special counsel. He had more than one disqualifying conflict of interest, including his close ties to Comey, who was a crucial witness. The appointment itself had the dirty fingerprints of the insufferable Comey all over it.

Worse, Mueller met with the president in the Oval Office the day before he accepted the assignment to investigate Trump. It was a trap. The appointment by Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, was not only a treasonous act of retaliation, but also violated federal regulations.
The ensuing witch hunt took on an odious dimension when Mueller hired a “hit squad” of highly partisan prosecutors. They hated Trump, and their toxic biases polluted the report they produced. But what they left out was revealing.
WILL CHAMBERLAIN: HOW THE FBI TRAMPLES LAWYER CLIENT PRIVILEGE TO HUNT TRUMP ALLIES
Nowhere in its 448 pages will you find a single word about the corrupt acts and gross misconduct at the FBI that formed the basis of Mueller’s investigation. He also turned a blind eye to whoever engineered this covert deception to influence elections and destroy a presidency.
The fictional story was created and financed by Hillary Clinton to smear her political opponent and tip the election in her favor. Behind a double firewall of hidden payments, her campaign and the Democrats hired a bumbling ex-British spy, Christopher Steele, to conjure up a fake dossier that was then funneled to the FBI, the Justice Department and the Trump-hating media, who eagerly swallowed it up as gospel.

The fake scandal took off. Yet all of this was deliberately ignored by Mueller and his allies. The covert actions of Clinton and her cronies to hype the non-existent conspiracy were brushed aside.
The magnum opus that Mueller ultimately produced is regarded as an egocentric monument to the miscarriage of justice. When he was called to testify at televised hearings, it became an embarrassing spectacle. The special counsel stumbled and stammered. He seemed lost and confused.
Mueller struggled to understand basic questions. His answers were slow, hesitant and uncertain. It was clear that Mueller had not written the report that bore his name. He had a poor grasp of the facts and seemed unaware of the law that would support the evidence cited therein.

The debacle of his disoriented discourse was a disaster politically and personally a disaster for Mueller. He was not what his vaunted reputation promised. His diminished mental acuity made it clear that he had been little more than an aloof figurehead, handing over command and control to his cadre of hyper-partisans.
Everyone who dedicates their life and career to serving our country deserves our thanks. Tragically, despite all of his exemplary service earlier in his career, Mueller’s latest endeavor will forever tarnish his legacy. His mistakes and miscalculations became visible to all. As a result, he did the nation a grave disservice. History should remember it as a tragic epilogue to an otherwise well-lived life.
