Doctors Without Borders, or Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is an organization that most people assume focuses on providing much-needed aid and supplies in difficult circumstances, without prejudice or favor. However, one of the organization’s former leaders criticizes the way MSF has handled the situation in Gaza, going so far as to say its members have acted as “Hamas’ henchmen.”
US-backed Gaza aid group accuses Doctors Without Borders of spreading ‘false’ claims
“Americans need to know that Doctors Without Borders is not the organization it was 15 or 20 years ago. It has become a biased, partisan and militant organization.”
On October 12, 2023, less than a week after Hamas carried out its brutal massacre and took more than 250 people hostage, Doctors Without Borders has condemned the massacre but also called for an end to Israeli actions in Gaza, making no mention of the hostages.
“Doctors Without Borders is shocked by the brutal massacre of civilians by Hamas, and by the massive attacks on Gaza and Palestine, now being pursued by Israel,” the organization wrote. “MSF calls for an immediate end to the indiscriminate bloodshed, and for the creation of safe spaces and safe passage for people to reach them urgently.”

Destexhe acknowledged that in order for Doctors Without Borders to operate in Gaza, it must work with Hamas because the terror group controls “the entire civil society and all medical facilities” in the enclave. He said operating alone would have been impossible during his tenure as secretary general and that the organization said it could not work with “a totalitarian and terrorist organization.”
MSF has faced scrutiny over its actions and statements regarding the situation in Gaza.
Earlier this year, Doctors Without Borders launched advertisements against the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US-Israeli-backed organization. Doctors Without Borders accused GHF of participating in ‘systematic violence’.
GHF spokesperson Chapin Fay called MSF’s accusations “false and disgraceful.” He said the organization was amplifying disinformation.

Although it was later discovered that the explosion was caused by a Palestinian Islamic Jihad missile that misfired, MSF did not correct or expunge its conviction. still available on X but has a community note.
“MSF lies, MSF is biased, MS is biased and MSF is complicit with Hamas,” Destexhe said.
Destexhe believes that the solution to MSF’s bias problem in Gaza is for the organization to leave the enclave.
“If MSF withdraws, the humanitarian situation in Gaza will not change,” he said.
Destexhe said he believes that without Doctors Without Borders there would still be doctors in Gaza treating patients in need and that the organization does not have “any added value” in the area.

He recalled previous moments when MSF prioritized ethics over presence, such as when it withdrew from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a decision made during his tenure as Secretary General.
In 1994, during the Rwandan genocide, part of the organization made the choice to leave, thinking that staying would only legitimize the violence that was taking place.
A Doctors Without Borders document explains that the organization “was forced to choose between continuing to work in the camps, further strengthening the power of the genocidaires over the refugees, or withdrawing from the camps and leaving behind a population in need.”
Ultimately, the French branch of the organization withdrew at the end of 1994, while the Dutch, Belgian and Spanish branches chose to remain. However, Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium and Médecins Sans Frontières Netherlands had to discontinue their programs in July 1995.
