The FBI has released a new one report August 12 about crime in schools and it is a wake-up call that cannot afford a parent to ignore. Between 2020 and 2024, legislative enforcement agencies reported nearly 1.3 million criminal incidents that occurred in school ownership in the United States. This stunning figure includes approximately 540,000 attacks and 45,000 sex offenses – crimes that children immediately victim in places that are supposed to be safe ports to learn.
The kicker is that this figure is almost certainly an undercount. In 2024, only about 9,000 law enforcement agencies submitted data to the FBI for the report, even though there are around 18,000 of these agencies nationwide. That sub -reporting means that we only get a partial picture that probably misses hundreds of thousands of more incidents of excluded areas of law. The real number of crimes in the American schools is undoubtedly much higher and paints a still grim portrait of the system.
Children should not be trapped in dangerous schools. Every day children are exposed to violence, abuse and chaos in these institutions run by the government. Attacks are the majority of these crimes and change corridors and classrooms in battlefields. And the sex offenses are a hair -raising memory that predators are lurking where we can expect them the least. Parents send their children to school who expect education, not in danger. Nevertheless, the FBI data shows that that is exactly what happens.

The Ministry of Education of President Donald Trump has recently released guidance in which states are instructed to offer school choices to students who are stuck at “persistently dangerous” schools. This guidance is a good first step, which reminds States to enable families to escape from failing and unsafe environments by switching to safer alternatives.

The evidence indicates overwhelming that school choice helps children to visit safer schools. My peer-reviewed analysis of the literature, published in Educational Review in 2022, showed that private and charter schools are consistently safer than traditional public schools. These choice options promote environments with less violence, fewer disturbances and stronger discipline standards. Competition forces schools to prioritize safety to attract and retain families.
Take for example the latest gold standard evaluation of the DC Opportunity Scholarship program. Students who won the lottery to go to a private school were 34% more likely to report that they were in a “very safe” school compared to their colleagues who stayed in public schools. This randomized controlled test – closest to a scientific experiment in education policy – proves that school choice can save lives by avoiding children.
The failures of public schools go beyond violence. The latest data from 2024 shows that no child was skilled in mathematics at 80 Illinois Public Schools. Zero. These malfunctions are all symptoms of a broken system. Children are trapped in these violent institutions without escape sleeve, especially in states where teachers are running the show and block school choice at every turn. Trade unions give priority to jobs for adults over the safety and success of children, lobbying against reforms that would give families options.

The epidemic of sexual abuse in public schools is particularly horrible. A report from the Department of Education from 2004 estimated that about one in 10 children will experience the sexual misconduct of educator by the time they graduate from high school. These are millions of children who are subject to abuse by the adults who have entrusted their care.

A recent recent study from 2023 showed that 11.7% of recent graduates reported that the sexual misconduct for educator had experienced during their K-12 years. This data represents systemic rot that requires immediate action.
Texas is at the forefront in this area. State Representative of Texas, Mitch Little, sponsored a bill to eliminate immunity for public schools and their employees in cases of sexual abuse and governor Greg Abbott it has signed the law this year. The public school system needs more accountability, and this account is a step in the right direction for justice that each state should follow. By removing the immunity of the government, victims can finally hold districts liable for failure to protect children, so that a clear message is sent that abuse will not be protected by the system.
Author and Podcaster Michael Malice is right when he says: “Public schools are literal prisons for children and the only time that many people will ever encounter physical violence in their lives.” For too many children, school is a daily test of survival instead of a place for growth.

The new FBI report is the latest proof of the failures of the public school system.
We can no longer allow the teachers’ cartel to lock children in these dangerous institutions. Parents know the best and they deserve the power to choose safer schools for their children. It is time to crush the prison walls of the Monopoly of the public school and to build a future where no child is caught in violence.
