St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital estimates that around 400,000 children around the world will be determined with cancer this year. In the US, research and treatments have contributed to increasing the survival rates. 80% of the children live five years or more with treatment, but a lot of work is done to improve that statistics and find medicines for more rare forms of cancer.
“Children with brain tumors were left behind. Because the treatments are very old, they are from the 80s, or not,” said Fernando Goldsztein.
The son of Fernando, Frederico, was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was nine years old. Medulloblastoma is the most common brain tumor in children, but it is still rare. Only five of a million children are diagnosed with the disease every year, making finding financing for new research difficult.
“Unfortunately he fell back,” Fernando said. “At the time, I was told by the doctors that there was nothing to do to save my son, that I had to go back home and spend time with him.”

The five -year survival percentage for medulloblasto patients is more than 80%. But when the disease returns, the survival percentage falls from five years to less than 40%.
“When I received that devastating news five years ago, after two weeks, I recovered a little, you never recover, right? But I recovered a little and I said,” I have to do something, I will do something, “Fernando said.
Cancer deaths touch ‘alarming’ increase due to the common health status, experts say
Fernando Has Made It His Mission to Find a Cure for Frederico, Who is Still Dealing with Recurrent Medulloblastoma at the Age of 18. Two Years After Frederico’s Cancer Returned, Fernando Launched the Medulloblastoma Initiative, OR MBI, Alongoblastoma Initiative Roger Packer, One of the World’s Leading Medulloblastoma Researchers at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC
“We try to find a cure for this disease as quickly as possible. So it is a model that brings together the best spirits in the field,” Fernando said. “MBI is all about cooperation and synergy. The scientists, to be financed by us, have to work as a group.”

The initiative has brought together more than a dozen laboratories from all over the world.
“By everyone who had every piece of the puzzle, we were able to move very quickly and achieve very interesting results,” said Fernando.
Since Fox last spoke with MBI, the group has helped accelerating at least two clinical tests at the University of Florida for Medulloblastoom and various other studies are in the making.
“We have much more in our pipeline,” said Fernando. “We are enthusiastic about these results.”

In a clinical study financed by MBI, scientists program the white blood cells of patients to find and destroy tumor cells. The results are promising and the cancer of one participant was almost eliminated.
In a separate study that is still being tested on mice, scientists from the University of Florida are investigating an experimental mrna-based cancer vaccine. The study can lead to a universal admission that helps to start a patient’s immune system in combating cancer.

100% of the donations given to MBI go into supporting research and clinical studies to help children like Frederico. Fernando says that his son is doing well thanks to much of the new research that is being done.
“He is a bit of a bit, but we know that this type of tumor is coming back, so it is running by the time. And that is why we are going to save him and save thousands of other children,” Fernando said.
