Donald Trump embarrassed himself and the country when he showed up for a recent dignified handover for troops who lost their lives in the war with Iran wearing a baseball cap.
Trump then used the dignified transfer in a fundraising email.
The pain that families are already feeling from the loss of their loved ones must be compounded by seeing the president view their time of grief as a promotional opportunity.
The AP reported on Trump’s nonchalant attitude about Americans who died in his war, in the first dignified handover of the Iran war:
“It’s the bad part of war,” he told reporters afterward. When asked if he was concerned about having to make multiple trips to the base for additional dignified transfers as the war continued, he said, “I’m sure. I hate to do it, but it’s part of the war, isn’t it?”
Trump hates it, but he doesn’t hate it enough to end it a war of choice that will likely kill more Americans.
The dignified transfer on Wednesday included six American troops who died in a plane crash over western Iraq. The troops assisted in the war against Iran.
It appears that at Wednesday’s dignified handover, the families did not want their moment of trauma and grief to be turned into a publicity stunt.
