Boulder, Colo. (AP) – Colorado Coach Dion Sanders revealed on Monday that he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer, but after the operation his oncologist considered him hardened.
Dr. Janet Kukreja, the director of urological oncology of the CU Cancer Center/Uchealth University of Colorado Hospital, said that Sanders had removed his bladder as part of the surgical plan.
Sanders intends to supervise the Buffaloes this season when he enters his third season in Colorado.
Sanders, who turns 58 next month, spoke with the media on the eve of Fall Camp. He brought his medical team to discuss his diagnosis.
The charismatic coach returned to the campus last week and announced on social media: “Back and felt great!” He missed football camps in Boulder this summer in the midst of reports that he was sick.
On Sunday, the production team of ‘Well off media’, which Sanders and the Buffaloes describes, posted a Video on YouTube From the first meeting of the coach with the team. In the middle of the clip there was a scene, dated 9 May, where Sanders said: “I don’t know if I am mentally, emotionally ready. Last night was difficult, yesterday was difficult because I had to make a will. That is not easy at all to think that you might not be here.”
Sanders has tackled problems around his left foot since he had amputated two toes in 2021 because of problems with blood clots while he was coaching in Jackson State. He missed the Mediadag in 2023, his inaugural year in Colorado, after a procedure to remove a blood clot from his right leg and another to straighten toes on his left foot.
The buffalo start the season on August 29 against Georgia Tech on Folsom Field. It will be the first season that he has not coached one of his sons. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was prepared by the Cleveland Browns, while Shilo, a safety, is in the camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Dion Sanders and the Buffaloes went 4-8 in his first season and 9-4 last season, with an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. They have large shoes to fill with replacing Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
