While some Democrats are calling for Trump to be impeached this year, Democrats in the House of Representatives, even those who support impeaching Trump for a third time, know that won’t happen this year.
The Democrats do not control the House of Representatives, which means they do not have the votes. A fully supported push by Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives for impeachment would look bad because the math doesn’t add up.
There is also the practical reason that Donald Trump is currently busy setting himself and his party on fire every day. A doomed impeachment would give Trump the distraction he wants and unite his party before the midterm elections.
Pursuing impeachment now would also deter voters who have clearly shown in dozens of special elections that they are willing to vote for Democrats based on the economy, affordability and the fact that Trump and his party have made everything they have touched worse since returning to power.
Impeaching Trump won’t accomplish anything even if the Democrats had the votes, but there is one strategy that has proven very successful for the minority in the House of Representatives.
Democrats have been able to use the threat of investigation and impeachment to force members of Trump’s Cabinet to resign. It worked to get rid of Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi, and now Democrats are turning their attention to Pete Hegseth.
The first call to impeach Hegseth for war crimes came in December 2025. The war in Iran has increased the urgency to get Hegseth out of the Pentagon. The articles of impeachment will be filed next week.
Why is it more important to get Hegseth out than to impeach Trump now?
