Marjorie Taylor Greene may be the tip of the iceberg. Greene’s abrupt resignation from the House was intentional. She did not inform Donald Trump and Mike Johnson in advance because she wanted to further reduce the narrow Republican majority in the House of Representatives.
Republicans are already faced with the prospect of a zero-vote government majority in the House of Representatives. There is a special election in Tennessee for a House of Representatives seat in a (+22) Trump district, which is much closer than anyone expected for early December. Democrats will win special elections in blue districts of Texas and New Jersey in January and April.
By not resigning until January 2026, Greene knew the election to fill her seat likely wouldn’t take place until after Georgia’s primary in May. The slim three Republican majority could be gone before the election for Greene’s seat.
At best, Republicans in the House of Representatives will have to try to govern with a one-vote margin until May 2026.
However, the situation is about to get much worse for Mike Johnson and Trump.
House Republicans are tired of being treated like trash by Trump and the Speaker, and a senior House Republican sent a text message to Jake Sherman explaining how they feel.
Sherman posted on X:
This entire White House team has treated ALL members like trash. ALL. And Mike Johnson made it happen because he wanted it to happen. That’s the feeling of almost everyone: appropriators, authorizers, hawks, doves, ordinary people. The arrogance of this White House team is off-putting to members who are trampled and threatened. They don’t even allow small victories like announcing small grants or even agencies responding. Even the prominent, regular random members are no more upset than ever. Members know they will be in the minority after the midterm elections.
Then the bomb came. More surprise resignations are coming and Republicans could lose the House.
