Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen insists Denmark will not negotiate over its sovereignty, despite President Donald Trump announcing a “framework” for an agreement on Greenland has been reached.
In a statement, she indicated that the nation is open to discussions with allies, as long as the involvement respects Denmark’s “territorial integrity.”
“Security in the Arctic is a matter for the entire NATO Alliance. That is why it is good and natural that it is also discussed between the Secretary General of NATO and the President of the United States. The Kingdom of Denmark has long worked for NATO to increase its involvement in the Arctic,” Frederiksen said in the statementwhich is written in Danish.
“We have had a close dialogue with NATO and I have continuously spoken with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, both before and after his meeting with President Trump in Davos. NATO is fully aware of the position of the Kingdom of Denmark. We can negotiate on everything political: security, investments, economy. But we cannot negotiate on our sovereignty,” she claimed.

The Danish Prime Minister noted that “only Denmark and Greenland themselves can make decisions on issues that concern Denmark and Greenland. The Kingdom of Denmark wants to continue to have a constructive dialogue with allies on how we can strengthen security in the Arctic, including the US Golden Dome, provided this is done with respect for our territorial integrity.”
Her comments come after Trump announced on Truth Social that “based on a very productive meeting I had with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework for a future deal regarding Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic.”
“This solution, when completed, will be a great solution for the United States of America and all NATO countries,” Trump said. wrote in the post. “Based on this understanding, I will not impose the tariffs that were scheduled to take effect on February 1. Additional discussions are ongoing regarding the Golden Dome as it relates to Greenland.”

During a speech at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Switzerland on Thursday, Trump appeared to indicate he would not use force to take Greenland.
Discussing NATO, he said, “We’re probably not going to get anything unless I decide to use excessive force and power, when quite frankly we would be unstoppable. But I won’t do that.”
‘I will not use force. “All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland,” Trump said.

In one post on X, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said: “We are happy that POTUS has ruled out taking Greenland by force and stopped the trade war. Now let’s sit down and figure out how to address US security concerns in the Arctic, while respecting the KoD’s red lines.”
