The relaxed bike ride of a man and woman along a Canadian path took a frightening turn the weekend when they were two grizzly bears, causing them to attack.
Local authorities said that the woman thinks quickly saved their lives when she used Bear Spray to drive the animals away.
The incident happened around 4.30 pm on Saturday 26 July, while the couple rode on e-bikes near the Kootenay River. According to the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (COS), the bears were attacked after they were surprised.
The woman told the authorities that she heard her husband scream before she saw a bear towards her. While she reached for her bear spray, she saw another Grizzly attacking her husband. She started the spray again and successfully drove both bears away.

Officials said that the man was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital by care providers, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to recover.
“The couple was well prepared,” said COS inspector Dave Webster in a Facebook message. “They had a bear spray, kept it accessible and knew how to use it. Their actions were commendable, and we are insisting on everyone in Bear Country to take similar precautions.”
After the attack, officers interviewed the victims, inspected the scene and had consulted a carnivore expert, who concluded that the bears probably acted defensively.

In a statement released two days after the meeting, the Cos confirmed that the behavior of the bears seemed to be a defensive reaction and that the couple probably had overwhelmed the animals in a densely part of the path.
There were no indications that the bears had followed or hunted the couple, and no recent signs of bear grapes were reported in the area.
