Real Estate Player Costar, parent of homes.com and Apartments.com, suggests Zillow and claims that the online real estate market uses tens of thousands of its copyrighted photos to support its activities.
In judicial documents submitted to the Southern district of New York this week, Costar said it is trying “Zillow’s widespread and systematic infringement of copyright photos of Costar, which Zillow has exploited illegally to strengthen its online rental lists.”
Costar claimed in the application of 30 June that Zillow had shown and benefited from nearly 47,000 Costar-copyrighted images on Zillow.com and other Zillow sites, with many of the images, including the Costar watermark.

In many cases, an image appears on several different Zillow pages and different versions of entries, which according to the suit are displayed more than 250,000 times.
“The misconduct of Zillow is not limited to the Zillow family of websites. Through lucrative syndication, Zillow also distributes the images of Costar to his partnership network of mentioning websites, hosted by the supposed competitors of Zillow, RealTor.com and Redfin, mentioned.
Costar said in a release that the billions of dollars invested to create “the most extensive database of real estate information”, including building what it describes as the “the world’s largest library with real estate photos.”
The company said it used and hired thousands of professional photographers who have made millions of real estate images that are owned by Costar Group.

This contributes to the increasing legal challenges that Zillow is confronted with. This marks the second time within five weeks that Zillow has been hit with a lawsuit. The first came from Real Estate Makelaardij Kompas, which submitted a 60 -page complaint to the Federal Court of Manhattan and claimed that Zillow wrongly refuses to mention houses on its site that were first mentioned elsewhere.
