London (AP) – Coco Gauff was only the third woman in the open era to lose in the first round Wimbledon Immediately after winning the championship on the French Open, eliminated with 7-6 (3), 6-1 by ungusted Dayana Yastremska van Ukraine on Tuesday evening.
The No. 2-ranging Gauff made an error after error at number 1 court and ended with only six winners and a total of 29 casual mistakes with nine double errors.
It was just over three weeks ago that Gauff celebrated her second Grand Slam title by passing No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final On the red clay of Roland-Garros. The 21-year-old American also took the trophy home from the US Open 2023.
But although the big breakthrough of Gauff at the age of 15 in 2019 came to the All England club, when she defeated Venus Williams in her opening match and completely reached the fourth round, the Gras-Court tournament turned out to be its least successful Major.
It is the only slam where Gauff has at least made the semi -final.
Indeed, she still has to come beyond the fourth round and has now been sent home in the first round for the past three years.
The transition from clay to grass has proved difficult for most players, and the last woman who won the French open and Wimbledon in the same season was Serena Williams ten years ago.
Yet, since the open era started in 1968, only Justine Henin in 2005 and Francesca Schiavone left in 2010 from keeping the trophy in Paris to immediately left in London.
Gauff was never completely on her best Tuesday against Yastremska, who had all lost all three of their earlier matchups and was currently in 42nd place. The best Grand Slam result from Yastremska was to make the semi-finals of the hard courts of the Australian Open last year, although she entered this event with a record of only 10-11 in the first round games at Majors.
Gauff, on the other hand, was 20-3 at that stage, including a loss for Sofia Kenin in Wimbledon in 2023.
