The shooting and killing of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents was so egregious that it has even led the mainstream media to openly question and challenge the Trump administration.
CNN’s Dana Bash interviewed Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino. Before she even brought him to State Of The Union, she played the video of the shooting, which showed Alex Pretti unarmed and holding a cell phone.
Bash’s first question to Bovino was, “And I want to ask you what you see, because multiple angles of this incident show him holding up a cell phone and answering it, not a gun. Did he pull out his gun at any point?”
Bovino responded, “The weapon and… we know the suspect brought a weapon, a loaded high capacity 9 millimeter handgun, to a riot. We know that.
What happened at that intervening moment with the video you just showed will be revealed by the investigation. That is being investigated. And those facts and questions will be answered soon enough.”
Bash took issue with the government’s claim that Pretti was brandishing a gun, and the Border Patrol chief responded:
I think we need to look at the situation as a whole here. What happened leading up to this situation?
The suspect decided to inject himself in a law enforcement action. What is not stated here is the fact that Border Patrol agents and law enforcement agencies were conducting targeted law enforcement efforts against a violent illegal alien who was in the area, and that the suspect injected himself with a weapon in that law enforcement situation.
And what happened between… when that situation first arose and the shooting, that will be investigated and we will find out the facts of that.
What Bovino did was move the goalposts. Bovino never provided evidence or answered the questions. For more than 20 minutes, Bash presented video evidence and pressured Bovino, and the interview continued to get worse for the government.
