The laws focus on China with recently introduced legislation that would make more supervision of foreign ownership of American agricultural land.
The legislation aims to implement recommendations published by the Government Accountability Office in January 2024, which turned out that the Afida was poorly equipped to combat foreign ownership of American agricultural land.

More than 277,000 hectares of agricultural land was owned by Chinese investors from the end of 2023, with that country in states “throughout the country”, according to A USDA report.

In general, foreign investors of the American agricultural land at the end of that year were almost 45 million hectares, it said.
According to Webster, the American agricultural land of foreign entities was seen between 2014 and 2023.
States have also taken action in recent years, whereby Webster notices that many “already have a kind of legislation that prohibits or limits the purchase of AG land through foreign entities and governments.”

Half of the American states bar foreign ownership of agricultural land “from April this year”, Webster reported.
According to the USDA, the US had 1.3 billion hectares of private agricultural land at the end of 2023.
