Last year I left California to start my first full-time job elsewhere. At the time I thought my move was temporary. But now I know for sure: barring some miraculous bit of divine intervention, I won’t be going back.
Of course I’m not the only one. Young professionals like me are fleeing the state in droves, driven by the hope of better jobs, more affordable housing and better family circumstances elsewhere.
For some reason, the prospect of paying more than $2,000 every month to live in a 500-square-foot studio for the rest of your life isn’t appealing to many. That’s especially true in a state like California, where it has become increasingly difficult to find a job, any job, even if you have a college degree. California now has the highest unemployment rate in the country, meaning it has the highest percentage of people who are looking for work but can’t find it.
As someone born and raised in California, those facts didn’t make me want to leave. I’m confident I could have found a job upstate and, as sad as it is to say, resigned myself to a lifetime of living in an apartment.
CALIFORNIA’S HATE FOR CAPITALISM KILLS THE GOOSE THAT LAYED ITS GOLDEN EGG

So if it wasn’t the economy, what drove me to make my “temporary” move permanent? Partly because of the state’s absurd move under Democrat Gavin Newsom to brand itself as Woke Central — but more importantly, because of the horrific message it sends to children.
As someone who wants a family one day, I can’t imagine raising children in Newsom’s California.
At age 5, my child was able to receive sex education from her public school teacher.
In high school, she would be required by law to take a pro-LGBTQ sex class on contraception, abortion, gender identity and other issues, without any religious discussion. As a resource, she would be encouraged to read ‘SEX: The Everything You Need to Know About Sexuality, A Guide to Get You Through Your Teens and Twenties’, a book with graphic descriptions of anal sex and bondage.
At just 11 years old (or even younger), she could be secretly “gender transitioned” by her teachers without my knowledge (thanks to a 2024 law signed by Newsom).
In high school, she would be forced to take another sex ed class that, depending on her school, might be taught by Planned Parenthood itself.

Of course, some of that could be avoided by opting out or homeschooling (although the state seems to make it even harder to do that every year).
What’s more problematic is what you can’t choose: the state-sponsored culture of death that permeates the atmosphere.
As someone who wants a family one day, I can’t imagine raising children in Newsom’s California.
Newsom, like former Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris before him, appears to be running a presidential campaign centered on so-called “reproductive rights” — and he’s using California as his testing ground.

Described by Planned Parenthood affiliates as a “champion” for their cause, Newsom has committed to making California a haven not only for illegal aliens, but also for infanticide.
Newsom recently told Louisiana’s Republican Attorney General Liz Murrill to “go for yourself” as she tried to extradite a California “doctor” facing criminal charges for shipping deadly chemical abortion pills to Louisiana.
Last fall, Newsom announced $140 million in emergency funding for abortion facilities across the state to keep them open after the loss of federal funding.

And in January, state lawmakers announced they would give abortion providers another $90 million.

Although California does not require abortion reporting, estimates suggest that the state saw approximately 183,240 abortions in 2024 alone, with as many as 31% of pregnancies (nearly one in three) ending in abortion. That is drastically higher than the national abortion rate, which is between 17 and 25% according to various sources.
Such a high number, with nearly one in three babies having their lives deliberately ended through abortion, reflects a culture that devalues life and sees it as disposable.

That same culture is reflected in California’s assisted suicide program. The state reports that 1,281 people received prescriptions for assisted suicide in 2023, up from 293 in 2016, the program’s first year. The number of other suicides has also increased (although that is true across the US). Meanwhile, embryos (preborn children) created through IVF are being lost or destroyed across the state as Newsom allows an explosion of IVF tourism, baby buying and an American footprint.
California’s woke agenda is bad, but avoidable in most cases. What cannot be avoided is the state’s promotion of a culture that views life as negotiable and disposable. That kind of environment is no place to raise a child.
