In 2012, the Obama administration decided that American children did not need whole milk. As a result, our children missed out on essential nutrition and our farmers lost crucial income. The Obama-era economic stagnation and anti-farm policies, including those promoting the Green New Scam, multiplied farm hardships and many hardworking Americans began to lose hope.
Nearly a year ago, President Donald J. Trump’s inauguration restored that hope, and today he renews it. By signing the Whole Milk for Heathy Kids Act, President Trump is making good on his promise to put the well-being of America’s farmers and America’s children first.
While President Obama has taken market share away from America’s dairy farmers to fight the war on healthy fats, President Trump is expanding markets at home and abroad and pushing for better, real food options for our children.
WHOLE MILK GOES BACK TO SCHOOL CAFETERIA AFTER TRUMP SIGNS LAW AS EXPERTS BENEFITS
The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, sponsored by Sens. Roger Marshall, R-Kan. and Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., and defended by Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa. and Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., are restoring whole milk to schools across the country, providing real food for the next generation and standing up for the farmers who feed this country.
This issue is close to my heart. Last year during my confirmation hearing, Senator Marshall asked me whether whole milk belongs in school lunches. I enthusiastically agreed. I also mentioned that growing up, my mother made sure our refrigerator was always well stocked with whole milk. She knew instinctively that whole milk was a building block for a healthy future for me and my younger sisters.
So much has changed since our nation’s founding 250 years ago, but the benefits of drinking whole milk have remained the same. In any case, the nutrients that whole milk naturally provides are in greater demand than ever before.

The childhood health crisis our nation currently faces is nothing short of an existential threat.
More than 75% of children in America struggle with obesity, poor physical fitness, or related health problems. These rising rates of chronic diseases are influenced by several factors, but diet plays a central role.
We have a responsibility to help solve this crisis, especially because it was caused in part by misguided federal nutrition policies that replaced real food with ideology.
The lack of whole milk in schools has long been overlooked by countless government officials, but President Trump took notice and has done something about it. This administration understands that the national health crisis cannot be overcome without refocusing federal nutrition policy on science and real-world results.

Let’s be clear: whole milk is not just a drink on the chalkboard. It’s a nutritious, affordable source of protein, calcium, vitamin D and healthy fats that growing bodies and minds need to thrive.
Bringing whole milk back to schools also builds on this month’s release of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030, which recognizes whole milk, protein and healthy fats as essential building blocks of a balanced diet.
For the first time in years, federal guidance and school meal programs will complement each other and send a consistent message to families about what healthy eating really looks like.
