On Thursday, March 19, an 18-year-old student at Loyola University in Chicago named Sheridan Gorman was allegedly shot and killed by an illegal alien from Venezuela. Jose Medina. The networks were barely able to comment on the story or talk about the alleged shooter’s immigration status. CBS spent just two minutes, followed by ABC at 79 seconds and NBC at 23 seconds. Searching for it on PBS or NPR found nothing.
PBS stations wasted 90 minutes on a documentary entitled “White With Fear,” about how Republicans are using overtly racist tactics to win elections, one of which, they claimed, was highlighting violent crimes by illegal immigrants. Their main example was conservatives reporting on the 2015 murder of Kate Steinle in San Francisco.
The networks hate reporting on crimes committed by illegal immigrants. They would insist that it is atypical. They like to proclaim that illegal immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than native Americans – if you’re willing to dismiss the crime of entering the country illegally or overstaying a visa. But this ignores the obvious logic of grieving families like Gorman’s: if the alleged illegal alien killer had not been allowed into the country, their loved one would still be alive.
GORMAN FAMILY CALLS ON JOHNSON AND PRITZKER AFTER STUDENT’S MURDER IN CHICAGO
Gorman’s family issued a statement about their loss and its politics: “Sheridan’s death cannot be reduced to a blanket ‘tragedy,’ nor can it be explained away by broad references to failures elsewhere,” the family said. ‘We are not interested in political arguments or in seeing responsibility shift from one place to another. If there were failures – as the governor said [J.B. Pritzker] itself – then each of them must be identified, investigated and dealt with directly.”

“Our daughter is not a policy debate. She is a life that was taken, and that requires accountability,” she added.
The networks could highlight this story by leading with empathy and not politics, but they are too defensive of Democrats, and these stories feel like “pro-Trump” stories, so they are more concerned about upsetting their liberal friends than appearing insensitive to the victims. They don’t want anyone to think that mass deportation will deter violent crime.
In a sad note for the future of journalism, the editors of Loyola’s student newspaper apologized for accurately describing the alleged attacker in the headline as an “immigrant man.” They changed it to just “male” and then described him as a “resident of Rogers Park” instead of an illegal immigrant. “That headline did not reflect key elements of the story, and was removed minutes later to prevent further harm to affected community members,” they wrote. In contrast to the ‘damage’ that the illegal immigrant would have caused.
ANGEL MOM, GOP BLAMES SPANBERGER AFTER ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT WITH 30 ARRESTS MADE FOR KILLING
Gorman is not alone. Stephanie Minter, 41, was stabbed to death on February 23 at a bus stop near Mount Vernon in George Washington, northern Virginia. The alleged murderer is Abdul Jalloh. an illegal alien with more than 30 arrests. “Jalloh is currently being held in Fairfax County on murder charges for Minter’s death,” according to WJLA in Washington, DC. We didn’t find that story on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS or NPR.
But they will attack immigration enforcement if anyone dies while obstructing enforcement. The ICE agent who shot Renee Good when she ran him over was a national issue for weeks and drew hours of attention. But Laken Riley and Rachel Morin and 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray were passed over as MAGA talking points. Riley and Morin’s convicted murderers were illegal immigrants. The alleged attackers accused of Nungaray’s murder are also illegal.
Last year at the Media Research Center, we discovered that ABC, CBS and NBC spent 143 minutes from April 1 to April 23 making the case for accused MS-13 gang member and “Maryland man” Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, who Trump deported to a “notorious” prison in El Salvador. But the trial of Morin’s illegal attacker, a mother who was raped and murdered while jogging in Maryland, lasted just twelve seconds on NBC, and nothing on CBS or NBC. The networks devoted 717 times more coverage to Abrego-Garcia.
Rachel Morin’s mother’s condemnation of Maryland Democrat Sen. Van Hollen — in front of the White House presser — failed to boost network coverage. But ABC’s Mary Bruce did promote the “remarkable image” of Van Hollen’s visit to El Salvador with the “wrongfully deported” Kilmar-Garcia.

Also in Maryland, an illegal immigrant named Hugo Hernandez-Mendez was charged last September with the murder of 19-year-old black woman DaCara Thompson, without any coverage on the networks. The alleged perpetrator had been arrested and charged with driving under the influence by U.S. Park Police in April, but was released pending trial in that case.
The networks could beat the Sheridan Gorman story by leading with empathy and not politics, but they are too defensive of the Democrats, and these stories feel like “pro-Trump” stories…
Thompson’s mother said she was “very disappointed” when she learned her daughter’s alleged killer had been released in April instead of being taken into ICE custody. “If they did what they had to do, we might not be here today.”

This underlines that the ‘nightly news’ on these elite networks is not an objective assessment, but a carefully crafted narrative, where the ‘news’ they prefer helps the politicians they prefer. No one was trying to embarrass Maryland members of Congress or Maryland’s Democratic Governor Wes Moore in front of these murder victims.
In this midterm election year, journalists will try to keep immigration as a negative issue for Trump and the Republicans. They imply that everything Trump touches turns into a disaster. They helpfully promoted Democrats who claimed that ICE could kill people if they helped the TSA with security at U.S. airports. The “news” feels upside down – that ICE is “lawless” and that the illegal immigrants are all nonviolent and “obedient.”
