Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Friday that his department is working to end federal benefits for illegal immigrants at the president’s direction. Donald Trump.
Bessent wrote in a post on X that “we are working to end federal benefits illegal aliens and keep them for American citizens.”
He said the Treasury Department “announced that it will issue proposed regulations clarifying that the refundable portions of certain individual income tax benefits will no longer be available to illegal and other unqualified aliens, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Additional Child Tax Credit, the American Opportunity Tax Credit, and the Saver’s Match Credit.”
Bessent’s post alluded to a Treasury Department announcement last week that it will propose new rules clarifying that refundable portions of those tax credits are “federal public benefits” to which illegal immigrants and unqualified aliens are not entitled.

“Illegal aliens using our financial institutions to move their illegally acquired money is exploitation and it will end.”
The move follows a recent legal opinion from the Ministry of Justice Office of Legal Counsel, which has adopted this interpretation.
The Treasury Department’s announcement indicated that it plans for the final regulations to apply beginning in fiscal year 2026.

The Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) announced Friday that it is issuing an alert to financial institutions to prevent illegal aliens from exploiting the U.S. financial system by moving illegally obtained money.
The announcement notes that money services businesses (MSBs) are generally required to file a suspicious activity report for a transaction involving at least $2,000, and that the MSBs know, suspect or have reason to suspect that this is relevant to a potential violation of law or regulation.
These transactions include the cross-border transfer of money derived from unlawful work or otherwise obtained illegally in the US
Bessent posted after Trump said Thursday that his administration will “permanently pause” migration from all “Third World countries” following the death of a National Guard member in an attack near the White House.

The comments mark a further escalation of migration measures ordered by Trump since Wednesday’s shooting, which investigators say was carried out by an Afghan who entered the US in 2021 under a resettlement program.
Trump did not mention any countries by name or explain what he meant by third world countries or “permanent pause.” He said the plan would also include items approved under former President Joe Biden’s administration.
