It’s rare for a progressive to get primetime cable news airtime. It’s even rarer to see the two biggest progressives in the United States get hours of primetime airtime on cable, but that’s what happened when CNN hosted Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for a town hall.
Collins asked Ocasio-Cortez about Republican claims that Chuck Schumer is supporting a government shutdown to avoid a primary challenge in the Senate from AOC.
Representative Ocasio-Cortez responded:
It says something about how desperate they are. They say this because. They refuse to do their job. They are grasping at straws. They’re trying to make this about political tabloids, political intrigue and horse racing.
The kind of things that make people sick in this country. Mm-hmm. We are sick of it. We’re tired of talking about these horse races and we’re tired of leaders who only want to spend their time talking about them, instead of talking about real issues that affect our lives, instead of talking about health care, instead of talking about wages, instead of talking about breathing air. And water. And water that is drinkable, and that’s it. It is frankly astonishing that the Speaker of the House of Representatives would waste his time on something so foolish and foolish, instead of actually caring about his own constituents who are suffering at the hands of his leadership.
Collins then, of course, asked about the horse race: “But are you saying Senator Schumer shouldn’t worry about a primary challenge from you?”
