Secretary-General António Guterres of the United Nations has ordered the staff to beat budgets prior to the budgetary vote of 2026 as part of a broader reform effort through its UN80 initiative.
Much of the belt rejecting comes at a time when the Trump administration has searched to save money with the help of Doge. In March, Guternes warned of cutbacks for the spending at the UN, which states that “continuing with recent financing reductions will make the world less healthy, less safe and less prosperous.” The US, as the best financier of the world organ, has given billions in recent years, while paying around a third of the budget.
Organizational belt, however, does not seem to have affected Senior level UN staff.

Many Member States release UN employees to pay taxes, but employees of the organization who have to pay taxes at their service station are reimbursed for the costs.
Dependent costs
There are substantial benefits for staff with people.
Employees receive a reimbursement of 6% of their net income if their spouses earn less than a general service salary at entry level.
Employees who are parents receive a flat reimbursement of $ 2,929 for children under the age of 18, or who are under the age of 21 and in secondary education. A second child benefit for staff without spouses is set at $ 1,025.

Employees of the UN can receive subsidies to cover part of the education costs for dependent children by a maximum of four years of post-secundary education. Refunds are calculated on a sliding scale. In a sample calculation, the UN explains that it would reimburse $ 34,845 of a tuition fee of $ 47,000.
The boarding can also be reimbursed up to $ 5,300 during primary and secondary education.
Pension fund, Healthcare Costs
UN personnel has access to the UN-Foume Personnel Pension Fund, with which employees can contribute 23.7% of the “pensionable fee, with two-thirds paid by the organization and a third party by the employee.”
Travel costs
The UN pays travel expenses for staff “at the first appointment, on a change in Duty Station, on separation of service, for traveling on official matters, for home leave travel and traveling to visit family members.” In some cases, the UN also pays for eligible spouses and dependent children to travel.
Travel costs include a “Daily self -sufficient reimbursement (DSA)” that is intended to cover “the average costs of accommodation and other costs”. Half of the DSA will receive eligible relatives, while staff at director level and above receive an additional DSA supplement.

Moving costs may include the full or partial removal and transport of household goods, or the storage of those articles.
Depositions of between $ 5,930 and $ 23,720 can be granted for non-room staff in certain service stations. The UN issues a reimbursements of $ 19,800 for staff with persons and $ 7,500 for staff without persons charged on non-family duration stations “to recognize the increased level of financial and psychological hardships that are sustained by involuntary divorce.” Dangerous wage of $ 1,645 can also be allocated to staff whose association or employment can “make it” clear, persistent and directly targeted “, or in service stations where there is a” high risk of becoming collateral in a war or active armed conflict. ”
Employed employees
Terminated employees are also permitted separation payments, which usually form a few months wage if their appointment has been terminated due to “abolishing the post or reduction of staff; poor health or disability for further service; unsatisfactory service; agreed termination.” Those who are terminated for unsatisfactory service or misconduct can receive half of the typical separation payment.
A repatriation subsidy can also be paid to employees who have been in expatriate service for at least five years, unless the staff was ‘briefly rejected’.

Future cuts on senior pay?
Dujarric did not deny that in 2026 the budget proposal does not include cutting senior staff or benefits. “The budget proposal for 2026 was drawn up before the launch of the UN80 initiative,” he said. “We are currently working on identifying efficiency, including reductions in the post, and a revised proposal will be submitted to the general meeting for his deliberations, which usually take place between October and December.”
