Gordon Chang, senior fellow at the Gatestone Institute, joins ‘Mornings with Maria’ to warn that Chinese support for Iran could escalate the conflict and increase the risk of a broader global war, ahead of President Donald Trump’s trip to Beijing.
The increasing alignment between China, Russia and Iran is raising new concerns about the trajectory of the conflict in the Middle East, as questions arise about the extent to which Beijing’s support could determine the outcome.
AeroVironment CEO Wahid Nawabi joins ‘Mornings with Maria’ to discuss rising drone threats, Iran’s capabilities and how new AI-powered laser systems can counter attacks at a low cost.
These concerns come as Iran seeks to engage both China and Russia in ceasefire discussions, while reports indicate continued material and intelligence support flowing from Beijing to Tehran.

Chang warned that China’s involvement goes far beyond diplomacy, pointing to a pattern of support that he said includes weapons, technology and intelligence.
“We just lost an AWACS aircraft in Saudi Arabia, and the Russians and the Chinese almost certainly provided the information to Iran for targeting purposes. That was a heavy loss for us,” Chang said.

He added that Beijing’s actions are part of a broader effort to challenge U.S. influence on multiple fronts, arguing that the current approach has failed to deter that behavior.
“There will be costs for China if it continues its support for Iran,” Chang said.

Chang also pointed to evidence that Chinese entities are providing sensitive data and capabilities that could be used to track U.S. military assets, warning that failure to confront that support risks prolonging the conflict.
“China’s support for Iran extends almost across the board… If we don’t recognize it… we could very well lose this conflict,” Chang said.
