Hello and welcome to the working week.
It is the summer here at FT Towers, but for all of us in the next seven days it is the top time. The meeting of NATO member states in The Hague on Tuesday is by far the most important of these given European defense problems and the open hostility for the 76-year-old military alliance by US President Donald Trump. Spain also threatens to spoil the party. Optimists hope that this meeting will be a chance to rebuild the belief in the institution.
Secretary-General Mark Rutte has improved the opportunities for a successful meeting by an Adroit Diplomatic MANOEURE in recent weeks. As a result, it is expected that the 32 Member States agrees to increase their target expenditure objective from 2 percent from GDP to 3.5 percent, plus an additional 1.5 percent on infrastructure. The difficulty for European signatories will then be how these expenditures increase to their domestic voters.
After NATO, most of the same European leaders (excluding UK) will go to the EU top in Brussels, mainly to think about the defense interviews. If NATO meeting is a disaster, these countries may have to prepare new strategies.
If we stick to Brussels, we have the EU-Canada Trade Summit. It is an interesting development given the shaking of Trump of global trading alliances, but not enormously consistent. Again, the conversation will run around weapons, because the two parties are expected to sign an agreement to participate in the “Rear-Arm Europe” Defense purchasing scheme.
Wars that are currently raging will continue to grab the headlines, but cannot be shared. However, FT subscribers can become a member of a webinar with FT journalists and guests who answer your questions, the Israel-Iran War: How far goes?
There is also a considerable military anniversary this week before the start of a conflict that has not yet been formally completed, 80 years after the event: the Korean war.
The central bankers are in force on the speaking circuit in the next seven days. It is again a thin week for economic data reports, the most striking is the Rich Nation comparisons in the index index of the purchasing managers. More details below.
The end of the profit season has a few big names that report figures, such as sports brand Colossus Nike and multinational clothing store H&M. Again, the most important news probably loves the legal archives. For example, Tesla Will try to send a vehicle from the company’s factory in Austin, Texas to a customer’s house, according to a function of the CEO of the company Elon Musk on X on 10 June. The milestone coincides with the 54th birthday of Musk.
One more thing. . .
It’s not just the top time. The festival season has arrived with the grandfather of all, Glastonbury, who will start this week. It has been a good year for Glasto Commercial. But it is clear that not everyone is a fan of music festival – just ask the inhabitants of London.
