American employees are at the front and central in the race to stay ahead of China. There are just not enough of them. Jobs are not full of advanced semiconductor bike rods to the Drydocks where the combat ships of the American Navy are built. Ships and chips are both in a crisis.
And no, Ai itself is not the answer.
“We have spent the past 10 years learning people how to cod. We have to spend the next 10 years of learning people how to use their hands,” said Marine Secretary John Phelan on July 16 in Detroit.
Tarif uncertainty threatens $ 490 billion in US production investments, reports warns
They are shipfitters, blasters, super -conducting process integration managers and technicians of semiconductor equipment that ensure that the US beat China. Both ships and chips depend on Touch Labor – albeit in very advanced factories and foundries.
Scheepbuilding is the key to the future of the American navy. File: The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) steams in close formation as one of the 42 ships and submarines representing 15 international partner countries during RIM of the Pacific (Rimpac) Exercise 2014. (Istock)
President Donald Trump understands. “Every policy of the Trump administration is designed to lift the American employee, to promote well-paid, blue jobs and to rebuild the industrial foundation of our nation,” he said August 26.
Not that you only see blue collars more: search for black T-shirts, plaid flannel, white clean room “bunny suits” and engineers in polos. But the necessities are the same. This critical workforce consists of men and women who have built up and thrive their technical expertise to get the job done, either with a tap or a lithography machine.
New study reveals threats for the class of 2025. Repairing it must be task no. 1 for America
Here is the amazing problem. Although both ships and chips sectors are booming with urgent programs and new opportunities, America and Nation have devalued the transactions and pays the price. The workforce of the production sector due to decades of globalism is so sharp that American national security and economic dominance are at risk.
Only 3% of the American population nowadays works in production, versus 9% during the Cold War. Covid-19 is striking. Texas, Florida and Georgia have added enough production paths to run for their pre-building employment levels, but almost half of the American states still have lower production totals than 2019.
Unless the other way around, the decline of production work can damage the position of America.
Navy Recruitment ‘Skyrockets’ under Trump’s leadership, says official
Ships
You already know that the American navy is smaller than China’s. The Navy’s own shipyards must hire 250,000 new employees for maintenance, construction and repair in the following decade. Add the shipbuilders who try to accelerate new submarines, aircraft carriers and torpedo hunters and a shortages of workforce threatening maritime dominance compared to China.

Priority no. 1 has been paid. Trump said wages for workers in 60 years are rising in 60 years. Wages for welders on nuclear submarines must be much higher than fast food and delivery trucks. They are not just jobs at entry level. Shipyards must retain experienced shipfitters that are ready to act as foremen and to stimulate the talent pool for hundreds of large suppliers. The wider plan is “the nation as a shipyard” with a combination of investments and the ticking of new labor pools to make ship modules at locations where work is abundant.
Chips
The American share of global semiconductor production fell from 40% from 40% in 1990 to 12% in 2020. With an expected growth of 33% in semiconductor assignments by 2030, the gap between vacancies and qualified candidates will leave 146,000 positions unbelievably behind. More employees are sought for both commercial semiconductors and for the advanced composite chips used in Defense electronics.

These are not your daily, mass-produced silicon chips; Think of multi-layered chips that feed information systems for satellites, F-16 hunters, radars, apache helicopters and more. And many are smaller than a grain of sand. Production at one advanced Linthicum, Maryland, Foundry alone will only hire four times by 2030 – if they can hire.

The good news is that production starts a revival, according to St. Louis Fed. The investments in new facilities have doubled since 2022. Private capital aimed at short -term modernization in shipyards can result in efficiency and continuing profit. The only big great account is expanding access to Pell subsidies, which can handle training programs at work. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez Dederemer sees job makers throughout America as “Back in the center of our economic agenda” at locations of a manufacturer of the space composites in Utah to a micro-electronic FAB in Idaho.
Trump likes to exclaim ‘the incredibly hard -working men and women of our country’. Don’t forget, they are in the front line of the race with China. American prosperity and safety – depend on American employees.
