The kidnapping took place just about 100 meters from the presidential palace in Niamey, where ousted President Mohamed Bazoum has been held since he was ousted in a coup more than two years ago, sources said. CBS News.
Following the kidnapping, the US embassy in Niger said all personnel are now only allowed to travel in armored vehicles and announced that all restaurants and open-air markets are “off limits”.
Kidnappings appear to have increased this year in areas of West Africa where militants operate. An Austrian woman was kidnapped in Niger in January and a Swiss citizen was kidnapped in the same country in April, Reuters reported.

In addition, five Indian citizens working for a company that provided services to the Kandadji dam project in Niger were kidnapped in an attack by gunmen in April that also killed a dozen soldiers, the newspaper said.
