There is one superpower that is once again dominating the planet, and that is the United States.
In just one year in office, President Donald Trump has catapulted the US from a country that seemed on the brink of inevitable decline to the American colossus that has overshadowed the other superpowers – especially China and Russia – and now determines the pace and direction of world events.
What happened in Davos should put to rest any doubts. Within 24 hours, President Trump turned global panic over a possible U.S. military intervention in Greenland into global aid with a framework for peacefully securing the giant island for generations to come.
We were the world’s “sole superpower” twice in the twentieth century, just after World War II and again after the Cold War. Thanks to Donald Trump and his administration, it’s happening again in the 21st century. It is important to understand why and how, and what it means for the future.
THE DONROE DOCTRINE: TRUMP REWRITE POWER POLITICS TO PUT AMERICA FIRST
There are three components that make a dominant world power: military strength, economic strength and bold leadership.
Military Power: By eliminating Iran’s nuclear program and capturing the Venezuelan dictator in the middle of the night—both without losing a single American—Donald Trump has shown that we have a military with unparalleled global reach and effectiveness. Meanwhile, Russia is mired in a World War I-like standoff in Ukraine, while the last time the Chinese military fought a real war was against Vietnam in 1979 – a war that China lost.
Economic Strength: This year will mark the start of an economic boom fueled by Trump’s tax cuts and deregulation, which could see the U.S. economy grow 5% or more (China will be lucky if it grows above 4.5%). Trillions of dollars in foreign direct investment and a revitalized American industrial landscape mean we will have an economy focused on making things again, not just spending money. At the same time, Trump’s use of tariffs has shifted the flow of global trade to America’s advantage and to China’s detriment, as we leverage our power as the world’s biggest and best customer to give other countries fair play in the trade game.
MORNING GLORY: PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP HAS BECOME THE ‘PUNISHER-IN-CHIEF’
Global management company Teneo’s annual CEO and Investor Outlook Survey shows that 73% of global CEOs expect the global economy to improve by 2026, largely due to coming economic growth in the US.
Bold Leadership: Just a year ago, America was still feeling the disastrous effects of a weakened president who surrendered world leadership to China, Russia and Iran. Joe Biden and his team had virtually paralyzed the US economy with rampant inflation and declining productivity, while their obsession with “climate change” came at the expense of one of the country’s most important economic assets, our oil and natural gas industry.
Enter Donald Trump, and suddenly what seemed problematic areas of the American economy — AI, cryptocurrency, oil and natural gas production, manufacturing — leap to the forefront of government policy to Make America Great Again. Instead of weakness and impotence on the world stage, the United States has reclaimed the lead, from ending the fighting in Gaza and reshaping the future of the Middle East, to beginning to expel invaders like China, Russia and Iran from the Western Hemisphere – be it Venezuela, Greenland or the Panama Canal.
TRUMP HAS SET THE PLACE FOR A US COMEBACK AFTER BIDEN’S RAPID ECONOMY
Most importantly, for the first time in a long time—perhaps not since Ronald Reagan was president—we have a president who is unapologetic about expanding American power and influence around the world, and who sees world leadership not as a temporary transition but as America’s birthright on its 250th anniversary.

Leadership does not mean being the best in the world. It does mean recognizing moments like last month, when Venezuelan Maria Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump in gratitude for supporting the democratic resistance in her country.
The moment tells us that under President Trump, America has once again taken over the moral leadership, as well as the military, economic and technological leadership of the planet.

These “single superpower” moments can fly by. The first after World War II faded with the rise of the Soviet Union and died in the jungles of Vietnam. The second, after the Cold War, was lost in cuts in military spending and an orgy of “peace dividend” spending, which facilitated the rise of communist China. Russia and especially China remain formidable opponents – and nuclear-armed ones at that. Trump and his administration must take full advantage of America’s current status as the sole superpower before an unforeseen event, or lack of judgment or courage, triggers its demise.
In the meantime, enjoy being the dominant power on Earth. It’s a great way to start America’s next 250 years.
