Almost 90 years after Amelia Earhart disappeared during her attempt to fly around the world, and amid renewed political attention with regard to her disappearance, a museum in her hometown continues to honor her legacy.
The Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum, which was opened in 2023 in Atchison, Kansas, has more than a dozen exhibitions and wants to “inspire all generations in the pursuit of flight,” said the museum’s website.

The center of the museum is “Muriel”, the world’s last remaining Lockheed Electra 10-E-that is identical to the plane that Earhart flew on her fateful attempt to fly around the world in 1937. Muriel is named after Earhart’s sister, Grace Muriel Earhart Morrissey, the website notes.

Built in 1935, Muriel flew to Pan American Airways and later served American commuters before he fell into disrepair. It was later saved by a pilot in California and was restored for three decades.

“For 30 years it was meticulously restored, with the aim of flying on the same world flight path as Amelia,” as noted on the website. “Unfortunately, the health problems prevented the flight.”

Muriel is surrounded by 14 interactive exhibitions that “take visitors through the adventurous life of Earhart.” This includes growing up in Kansas to the highlight of her fame as the first woman who flies solo about the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, according to the website.
Guests can step into a complete replica of Muriel’s cockpit, hear the roar of the engine feeding her plane, trying to sound their hand, explore Amelia’s digitized scrapbook, experience a virtual reality flight simulator, discover performance of other women in the aviation and more, the website notes.

“Amelia made the almost three-quarters of the road all over the world before she suddenly, and without notification, disappeared to see more,” Trump wrote. “Her disappearance, almost 90 years ago, has fascinated millions. I recommend my administration to declassify and release all government registers with regard to Amelia Earhart, her last trip and everything else about her.”
