In a shocking movement, CBS announced that the late night would cancel with Stephen Colbert in May 2026 and leave the Late-Night television company.
Colbert told his audience during Thursday’s recording:
Next year our last season will be. The network will end our show in May. It is the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS. This all just goes away.
I want to say that the people of CBS have been great partners. I am so grateful to the Tiffany network that I gave myself this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course I am grateful to you, the audience, who came here every night with us, beyond, all over the world.
The news is not a complete shock because the Trump allied Ellison Brothers take over, and one of their goals is to remove Trump critics from the network.
It was speculated for the first time a few weeks ago that both Stephen Colbert at CBS and Jon Stewart could be pushed out of the air at the now Ellison property of the Daily Show. It was seen as less likely that jacket would be canceled because the show is usually the highest rated in the late night, and CBS applied for decades in late night until David Letterman moved from NBC.
Trump’s impact on the media is very real. Since Trump returned to the office, his critics from his administration removed from the regular media.
If Colbert wants to continue his Late-Night Show, if the decision to pick him up was strictly about things, networking would stumble over himself to sign him.
Where Colbert the next one would end, should be seen as a test of the willingness of the media to stand against Trump.
If Stephen Colbert quickly finds a new controversial house, this is a hopeful sign. If not, the loss of Colbert will display the entire cave of the mainstream media to Trump.
