The German customs authorities recently made a skin-crawling discovery when they found around 1500 young Tarantulas hidden in a shipping of Spongecake boxes.
The package, which had arrived from Vietnam at the Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany three weeks ago, weighed more than 15 pounds and had a noticeable scent that civil servants has tipped, according to a press release from the Cologne Customs Office.
“My colleagues at the airport are regularly surprised by the content of forbidden packages from all over the world, but the fact that they found around 1500 small plastic containers that contained young Tarantulas in this package left even the most experienced among them speechless,” said Jens Ahland, spokesperson for the Cologne Customs -office, said in a statement.

“An extraordinary seizure for German customs, although we are sad by what some people do with animals purely for profit.”

Many of the Tarantulas did not survive the trip and the surviving spiders were placed in professional care. According to the press release, criminal proceedings are underway against the recipient of the package in the Sauerland region of the country.

“Animals of any kind should be explained in customs and import duties that are paid for packages of a non-EU member state,” said the release.

Last year a passenger at Miami International Airport was caught because he tried to get on a plane with a bag of snakes in the pants of the passenger. At the time, the TSA shared images of the reptiles on X and wrote that officers in Florida “discovered this bag with snakes hidden in a passenger pants at a checkpoint.”
