The Republicans based their entire midterm election strategy on massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, disguised as no tax on tips and no tax on Social Security.
Trump and his party thought they could fool the American people, but experts warned them, even before they passed the tax cuts, that counting on tax returns as a campaign strategy would fail because high inflation would eat up any increase in tax returns people might receive.
The war against Iran has sent gas prices to their highest level in five years, and the increase has come so quickly that comparisons are being drawn to the energy crisis of the 1970s.
The result is that voters don’t see a tax on tips and respond with a resounding “So what?” No Social Security taxes were paid asking, “Who cares?”
Something even worse than a failed campaign strategy is unfolding.
The American people reject the Republican Party’s economic ideology on taxes.
The latest Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll shows:
Americans disapprove of his handling of the situation with Iran by 66 percent to 33 percent. His rating of the economy has fallen seven points to 34 percent as gas prices have risen. His approval rating on inflation has fallen five points to 27 percent in that time, and his lowest rating comes from perceptions of his handling of the overall cost of living, with 23 percent approving versus 76 percent disapproving.
The entire midterm election campaign for the Republicans was supposed to be based on immigration and taxes. Trump is negative on both issues.
On taxes, only 38% of Americans approve of the president’s handling of taxes. Sixty-one percent of respondents disagree. That’s a net approval rating of (-23) before taxes.
The strong disapproval of taxes indicates that the American people are not fooled by the tax cuts for the rich and the crumbs for everyone else approach that Republicans have used for almost half a century.
The con no longer works. Many Americans now understand that the only thing trickling down to them is higher prices.
By pushing Republican economic ideology to its limits, Trump has done the American people one favor. He has opened their eyes to the fraud behind the Republican tax cuts.
