Ford is recalling more than 422,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a windshield wiper defect, federal regulators said Tuesday.
The recall includes Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs, as well as some F-Series trucks, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said. Specific vehicles that may be involved include the 2021-2023 model year Lincoln Navigator, 2021-2023 Ford Expedition and 2022-2023 Ford Super Duty.
A total of 422,613 vehicles are subject to the recall, while the share of vehicles with the defect is estimated at 3% of the recalled vehicles.
According to NHTSA, windshield wiper arms can operate erratically or break, causing wiper failure.

The safety agency noted that there may be a warning to drivers that the windshield wiper may be malfunctioning, as drivers “may experience erratic wipe speed from the driver or passenger wiper arm.”
“A malfunctioning or loose wiper arm can obscure the driver’s view, increasing the risk of a crash,” according to the NHTSA description of the defect.
“The wiper arm locking plate may have been improperly tightened at the supplier. The locking plate ensures that the arm head is properly seated on the wiper arm. In addition, the engagement between the knurled edge and the wiper arm may be reduced due to dimensional variability. Proper engagement of the knurl-to-arm head teeth ensures robust operation of the wiper arm,” the agency said.

Manufacturing improvements at the supplier in December 2022 addressed issues that led to the defective wiper arms. Therefore, the recall is limited to vehicles manufactured in a specific time frame.

The NHTSA recall report states that Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the windshield wiper problem.
NHTSA said notices to dealers were expected to occur on April 1, while mailing of notices to interim owners was expected to begin on April 13 and be completed by April 17.
