Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was reportedly arrested and imprisoned Wednesday, just hours after he was fired for having what the school said was an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.
Although details about Moore’s arrest are scarce, the 39-year-old was detained Wednesday afternoon in Saline, Michigan, following an alleged assault. according to ESPN. He was later turned over to authorities in neighboring Pittsfield Township and on Wednesday evening he was listed as an inmate at Michigan’s Washtenaw County Jail.
Pittsfield police did not name Moore in its documents Wednesday statementbut noted that the incident “does not appear to be random in nature, and there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the community.”
Thursday the department released a second statement showing that Moore – identified only as ‘the suspect’ – remained in custody and was expected to be arraigned in court on Friday, but provided no further details.
That same day, Washtenaw County court officials said in a statement that they were “aware of an ongoing investigation regarding Sherrone Moore” but did not disclose details of possible charges because “no paperwork has been filed with the court regarding this matter.”

News of Moore’s arrest came just hours after University of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed that Moore, a married father of three childrenwas “terminated with immediate effect” after having “an inappropriate relationship with an unidentified staff member”.
“This behavior is a clear violation of university policy, and UM has a zero-tolerance policy for such behavior.” Read Manuel’s statementbefore noting that Bill Poggi had been appointed to Moore’s post as interim.
Moore, a Kansas native, joined the Michigan Wolverines technical staff in 2018 and was appointed head coach in 2024, after departure by Jim Harbaugh.
Upon his appointment last year, he signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $5.5 million, according to The Associated Press. His firing after just two years marks the shortest tenure for a Wolverines head coach since the 1920s.
Despite the abruptness of Moore’s resignation, an industry source told CBS Sports his alleged misconduct “was the worst kept secret.”
“Everyone in the program has known this for the past two seasons,” another unidentified Michigan alum told the outlet. “This is a sad day to see it come to this. I feel terrible for all the players, coaches and families that will be disrupted. And I don’t know what happens to Sherrone.”
