When the Biden administration opened the border to millions of illegal immigrants, broadcast networks ignored the numbers and broadcast officials like Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calmly insisting, “There is no border crisis.”
This was not considered controversial. What drew criticism instead were Republican “stunts” – when Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sent migrants illegally entering their states to Chicago, Martha’s Vineyard or Washington, DC. “It’s inhumane,” said “CBS Mornings” host Gayle King.
So when the Trump administration began mass deportations and deployed the National Guard to protect ICE facilities under siege by violent protesters, the networks depicted the effort as brutal and authoritarian. Attacks on ICE offices — including several shootings in Texas — were not controversial among protesters. Enforcing immigration law did.
DEMOCRATS TRY TO TRANSFER ‘STATES RIGHTS’ SCRIPT TO DEFY AND INCREASE TRUMP’S NATIONAL GUARD PLAN
The networks rarely pay attention to immigration polls, but a recent New York Times survey found that 54% of registered voters support deporting illegal immigrants — a figure unchanged from previous polls. More than 90% of Republicans, 52% of independents and almost 20% of Democrats broadly support mass deportation.
The Democrats remain on the wrong side of public opinion, even as their governors and senators do friendly network interviews comparing Trump to Hitler and ICE to his Gestapo. CBS’s Margaret Brennan, who hosted Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois when she denounced “Gestapo tactics” on “Face the Nation,” did not fact-check the claim or suggest that such rhetoric could encourage violence against ICE agents and facilities.
This is the same moderator who checked JD Vance on migrant numbers during last year’s vice presidential debate — and then cut off his microphone when he objected.
PRITZKER ADDRESSS TRUMP TO BLOCK NATIONAL GUARD ACTION IN ILLINOIS
More than 1,000 immigrants have been arrested since the Chicago-area immigration crackdown began last month. Yet Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, via NPR and other outlets, accused Trump of turning cities into “war zones” with ICE and the National Guard — even dropping a Hitler comparison.
After the Texas National Guard arrived in Chicago, “CBS Mornings” quoted Pritzker’s social media post: “Donald Trump is not king, and his administration is not above the law.” In other words, illegal immigrants are above the law – and Trump is not. Democrats are sounding increasingly opposed to deportations, suggesting any removal is unjust.
FIVE TIMES DEMOCRATS DESTROYED ICE WITH HARD RHETORY
Judges who blocked Trump from deploying the National Guard were not criticized, even though NBC quoted Biden-appointed Judge April Perry as arguing that deploying the Guard would only “add fuel to the fire.”
CBS host John Dickerson accused Trump of acting unconstitutionally in a commentary on “CBS Evening News Plus,” saying, “A constitutional president is concerned not only about public safety, but also about liberty. Can he present dissidents as citizens with rights, or only as enemies? Does he pursue violence only after all else has failed, or as his first response? … What if the president is the author of disorder?”

They blame the violence against Trump on Trump himself. But can Dickerson understand that some of these “dissenters” are not citizens at all? On the streets, every illegal immigrant who protests against Trump is portrayed as a hero.

On ABC’s “The View,” co-host Joy Behar advanced a conspiracy theory that Trump’s deployment of the National Guard was “a pretext to stop the next election.” She wasn’t kidding. Yet the suggestion that Trump has plans to end the election is never labeled as an incitement to violence — even though such talk may have led to two assassination attempts last year.

Not every outlet joined in the hostility. NBC News surprised viewers with a rarely positive report, noting that the border is quiet. Reporter Julia Ainsley contrasted the circumstances: “In Eagle Pass, Texas, more than 2,000 migrants entered the U.S. in a single day during the Biden administration. But now, under President Trump’s administration, agents are encountering just 20 migrants a day here. Tonight, DHS is coming [is] touting the lowest number of illegal border crossings since 1970.” In Ainsley, there were even two Latino Texans present who were glad they voted for Trump because of the turnaround at the border.
But these broadcast programs are not made for Trump voters. They are designed to appease loyal Democrats and persuade voters with little information. The public is expected to accept the Orwellian idea that illegal immigrants are your peaceful “neighbors,” and that the real lawbreakers are the Trump administration and the National Guard.
